How to get music (podcasts, Spotify) to show up on lock screen?

Sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't? Is this a bug? Why is it not consistent?

I get music to show up by double tapping the home button when my phone is locked.

Thats the generic control center though right? Mine shows a play button and forward an backwards, but they dont work?

Anybody know how to fix this? Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, I think its a bug.
