Hi there, I'm new to this forum and new to an iPhone. I'm running Linux/Ubuntu OS on my PC and trying to get my new iPhone 5 to work.

Anyone have any ideas how to get iTunes 10.7.0.21 (most recent) running in Windows Vista in Virtualbox in Ubuntu 8.04 to read the new iPhone 5?

When I go to devices/USB devices, it shows my iPhone 5. However, iTunes is not showing my iPhone on the left bar and I can't figure out how to access the iPhone through iTunes in Vitualbox/Vista. I've shut down and restarted iTunes several times, and then I shut down and restarted Vista, but still the same.

I ran a device connectivity test through iTunes and everything checks out under ports, except "no iPod, iPhone, or iPad found". Below is the entire diagnostic (I replaced some #'s with [NA] as I wasn't sure if I should post on a public form). Any suggestions would be most helpful.

Also, do you know if there is a way to see the iPhone 5 as a drive on either Windows or Ubuntu, so that I could transfer pictures and music back and forth from computer easily without have to go through iTunes or photo program? Thanks.

Well, you are far to advance in computer knowledge for me to help in most of your post. I've never experienced iTunes on a virtual machine.

When you are in iTunes and you go to edit/preferences do you see your phone under devices there? I'm not sure if you were clear on that. Only reason I mention that is there is an issue (I believe) with IOS 6 and iTunes recognizing your phone via wifi. Sometimes I can, most times I can backup without hooking up to my PC.

One thing I can help you with. You can send your pictures to your computer without using iTunes. You can do that via dropbox or Google Drive. Just install on your device and your computer and that should work for you.

Dropbox uses the Agile Web Chain and again with Ubuntu and your set up I don't know how that will end up but Google Drive definitely.

Also, do you know if there is a way to see the iPhone 5 as a drive on either Windows or Ubuntu, so that I could transfer pictures and music back and forth from computer easily without have to go through iTunes or photo program? Thanks.

.
Windows explorer will see your phone as a drive when connected with USB
Keep clicking on it till you see the contents of the DCIM then you can drag and drop your pics to wherever you want, but not your music, that is best done with iTunes(unless you are jailbroken)
