HELP! bought iPhone with passcode and now its in emergency mode!!

Ok so I bought a iPhone 4 of someone on craigslist and the phone was locked with a password. I tried getting in it but couldnt and now the phone is in emergency mode. I want to get it unlocked for t-mobile. Is there anything I can do? i dont even know what firmware it is!!

when i got it it was unlocked i just checked to make sure it was working. then when i left it locked on me and when i asked the kid for the password he wouldnt answer his phone or text me back. so idk what to do
