Bloomberg reports today that Ruben Caballero, Apple’s senior antenna expert, expressed concerns to Steve Jobs during the iPhone 4’s early design phase that the antenna could possibly cause reception issues, and that it presented a “serious engineering challenge”. Bloomberg was told about Caballero’s voicing of his concerns by a source who is not authorized to speak on Apple’s behalf and who didn’t wish to be named. Another anonymous source claims that an unnamed carrier partner had also expressed concerns about the antenna to Apple, having carried out tests prior to the phone’s launch which indicated that the antenna might be a problem area.

Apple’s spokesman, Steve Dowling, declined to comment on the matter, and refused to put Caballero up for interview when asked to do so by Bloomberg, and Caballero couldn’t be reached either by phone or email when Bloomberg tried to contact him separately. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens at the press conference tomorrow.
