Hi everyone

I picked up an Iphone recently stuck with an error code of 1603, I've tried the following steps

1. Restore (via itunes)
2. Deleting the update in %appdata%
3. Using iREB (Compat mode set to XP Service Pack 2 with Admin rights ticked) - This shoved me onto error code 1604 which I thought to be some form of progress
4. Trying to escape recovery mode by holding the sleep + home button down until the apple logo showed up (this simply sent me back to the USB code + Itunes logo on-screen
5. I have tried restoring it through Itunes (on average this attempt takes 5min) then closing and re-opening itunes to restore again (Itunes forum help) however the device still shows the apple logo with the rotating circle still showing ergo the device doesn't show up on Itunes.
6. Leaving the iphone at this stage for 10 minutes with no joy it's just sitting there doing nothing with the circle icon ticking over

I've tried selecting custom firmware (4.1, 4.2.1 and I tried 3.1 which sent me back to 1603)

Any help would really be appreciated here

What model iPhone? We need the model to give you the correct firmware. 4.2.1, 4.1, and 3.1 are outta date

Howdy

Apologies for the slow reply there, I blame Henley Regatta ;)

I'm using an Iphone 3g but I have no idea of the firmware it has on it, I bought off my mate who didn't know what to do with it, I obviously thought I could fix it but clearly not.
Some updates;
1. Used two different cables now to connect it to my PC
2. Tried restoring it via my sister's Imac
3. My Dad's gone and taken it off me believing it 'just needs time' (when it's stuck on the Apple logo with the revolving icon at the bottom of the screen) even after Itunes says Error 1603/04

Download sn0wbreeze
Make a custom firmware (baseband preservation mode)
Go into pwned DFU Mode
Restore to that custom firmware

Heya folks

I followed your instructions to the letter, I opened up Snowbreeze (downloaded the most recent up to date version), selected the 4.2.1 firmware I'd previously downloaded, selecting Baseband Preservation and it then created a new ISPW file entitled; "sn0wbreeze_iPhone_3G-4.2.1-8C148". Snowbreeze then automatically ran iREB to put my phone into pwnd DFU state (black screen). I then loaded up Itunes and used Shift+Select to select the new firmware created by Sn0wbreeze.

The phone then returned to this annoyingly familiar screen:

What's our next move here? The Error code I got from Itunes was 1604 again.

Error code 1604 usually means trying to restore custom fw without being in pwned dfu. You may have a hardware problem. I suggest taking it into an apple store.

Eek okay =/ Is there nothing else you can suggest?

I've tried using sn0wbreeze to use both 4.0, 4.1 (giving me error codes of 1600) and 4.2.1 firmware now (Baseband preservation used)

What's with all these guides online then about fixing 16xx errors? =S

Solved the problem by giving the local Apple branch the busted 3g and buying a 3gs for a lovely low price of £100

New issue: Skype requires OS 4.3 and Itunes won't update the new phone beyond 4.2.1

Suggestions?

A 3gs is able to go to 5.1.1

So I've heard but whenever I click update on Itunes, nothing happens =(
