Dimming screen while watching movies on tv

I use a lightning to Hdmi connector to view my phone on my tv. I use it for watching films etc. But is there anyway to turn the screen off on the phone while the tv is playing the video??

Either the screen will turn off after whatever interval you have set or you can click the power button to turn the screen off.

If it stops the movie you could just turn your phone over (screen down). If you are worried you might miss a message you can go to Settings->General->Accessibility and turn on the "strobe for alerts) feature. When a call or message come in your flash will strobe. It is very bright and you can't really miss it.

I have tried pressing the power button but it knocks the video off. The screen doesn't dim. I find this a nuisance as I don't want both my phone and tv showing the same thing and burning out my phone faster than it would if it was off. I suppose I'll just have to put up with it lol
