Any advantage to using an app vs using default gmail push on iPhone? Any app recommendations?

I don't use gmail so I can't answer. Just be patient and I'm sure someone will help you when they get time. ;)

Default gmail push saves memory instead of going through downloading and constantly updating a push app, in my opinion. But both choices are good! They're guaranteed to push emails, anyway :P

The single largest advantage of using the Apple Mail app with GMail in push mode (requires that you add the account thru Exchange) is battery life and instant notification of an emails arrival.

I have 6 accounts setup thru Apply Mail. 5 are push and one is pull. The pull is set to manual mode so it doesn't drain the battery. Basically it only pulls email for that account when I open the mail app to look at other emails that have come in.

Thanks. So I'm guessing this app I have, "push gmail" isn't needed

I doubt it makes the gmail truly push. What's the link?

It is truly push. I tested the heck out of it. My Droid, PC and iPhone all receive the email, sent to the gmail account, within .5 seconds of each other.

To get true push on a gmail account, you have to set it up properly.

1) Settings
2) Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
3) Add Account...
4) Microsoft Exchange
5) Fill in EMAIL, USERNAME, PASSWORD and DESCRIPTION ONLY

When you hit next, it will query the system and then present a new dialog

6) Server - Put in - m.google.com
7) Save - And that is the hard part done.
8) Go back to the list of accounts.
9) Fetch New Data
10) Push - Turn it on.
11) Advanced - Make sure you have the accounts set for PUSH that support it.

Exit settings because you are done.

I have also tested PUSH support for Hotmail and Yahoo. AOL does not support PUSH at this time.

Now I know a lot of you are going "But there is a GMail specific add account". Yes there is and it is PULL only for mail. I tested it.

I use Google for Contacts, Calendars and push mail on a daily basis. If my wife (Droid X) or I (iPhone 4) enter a contact or calendar item the other phone sees it within 5 seconds usually.

Had to jump through some hoops to get this working with a Google Apps account, but it is now working. Thanks Skull one!

No problem. What extra steps are required for Google App accounts? I haven't had to deal with one of those yet.

The domain manager for the account has to enable a couple of features and migrate to the new "feature" system.
