when is tiny umbrella come to play? before or after the jb? i watched a couple of utubes and it all seems like it's done on cydia and cydia is installed after jb isn't it? and tiny umbrella is based on preserving baseband for future unlocking purposes? so if i'm only going to jb no point on using tiny umbrella?

TinyUmbrella comes into play at any stage. It is used to save the shsh blobs(apple signatures) that Apple uses to restore your device to a firmware..eg. 4.0.. so if you updated to 4.2 and didn't like it, with TU, you are able to downgrade. You don't have to be jailbroken to benefit from it. I, amongst thousands, highly recommend this tool. If you wanted to know everything about it, you could have contacted the author of the software and questioned him.
So , in saying, use it or lose it.
(meaning, you lose any chance of being able to downgrade should you need to.)

There is a good little app in Cydia called iSHSHit. It runs and grabs your blobs, it also allows you to email your blobs out direct from the app.
