Cancelling contract beforethe first 2 weeks

With the phone carriers I been with say you want to cancel your contract before the first 14 days and avoid cancelation fees. Do you have to return the phone in order to do so?

If the contract included a subsidized price (cheaper than buying it outright) for the phone.... then the phone will need to be returned.
