Buying iphone 3gs need help activating

Hi guys, so tomorrow I think I am buying an iPhone 3GS and its just been restored to IOS5 through iTunes, however it comes up with an activation screen and cannot seem to get it activated, he cannot find the original sim anywhere, so how will be the easiest, preferably cheapest way off getting it activated i will be using my 3 contract simcard also and cant really afford to get it fixed or activated and i dont want to be stuck with this htc wildfire. Thanks alot all help will be appreciated, please not we have tryed to bypass it by putting it in voice mode and trying to get round it but there is no clock to be able to click on.

if its locked to 3 then you can get a pay as you go 3 card and use that to activate it.. it does not have to be the sim it came with as long as its the 3 network it will activate

i dont think its on 3, it might be vodafone i think, so if i put in my friends vodafone on contract would that work?
