Best iOS ver. for iPhone 3GS?

I just got an iPhone 3GS 8gb off eBay the other day...Haven't received it yet. It supposedly has 4.2.1 on it. Should I upgrade any higher? I read somewhere that 4.3.2 is a good ver.? Also...I intend to jailbreak. If I keep 4.2.1 ... Is this the right jailbreak ver. to use... redsn0w 0.9.6b6 ?

If you're not concerned w/ Unlocking... go ahead and update to iOS 5.1.

I would like to keep my unlocking options open. This phone will be used on Straight Talk. Just wondering if anyone knows the best ver. to have...under 5.x. I'm either gona keep whats on it n jailbreak it and be done or if im not on an ideal ver....figure out how to upgrade just to a specific ver. and then jailbreak.
