AppleInsider reports today that the designers of Reserve Strap battery bands for the Apple Watch have revealed that the small diagnostic port that is hidden behind one of the watch’s lugs can actually be used to charge the watch.
“Our engineers have been able to independently confirm that the 6-pin diagnostic port underneath the Apple Watch case can be used for charging,” said the designers.
This has not as yet been confirmed by Apple, and it’s not known if Apple will modify the port so that it can’t be used to charge the watch in future.
AppleInsider says that if Apple does decide to allow the port to live, as it were, and let the designers continue to make such products as the Reserve Strap, it could pave the way for Apple to introduce a “Made for Apple Watch” accessories program, similar to the “Made for iPhone” program that allowed developers to access the Lightning connector and produce their own third-party Apple-approve accessories.
