9to5 Mac reports that Apple is planning to completely revamp the way in which the iPhone is sold in a bit to combat competition from Android smartphones. Details of the new sales push, which is being spearheaded by Apple CEO Tim Cook, emerged from a secret (or so they thought!) summit for Apple Retail Store Leaders from all over the world, which took place recently at Fort Mason in San Francisco. According to 9to5 Mac, Tim Cook gave a three-hour long speech, during the course of which he praised the way in which Macs and iPads are sold in Apple Stores, before then putting those two products on the “back burner” during his talk and focusing primarily on the iPhone. In particular, Cook, noted that while one out of four Macs sold worldwide is purchased from an Apple Retail Store, around 80% of all iPhones sold worldwide are not purchased in an Apple Store. Cook and Apple would like more iPhones sold in Apple Stores, because the iPhone is seen as a “gateway product”, according to 9to5 Mac, meaning that it will lead people to buy other devices from the store where they buy the phone. With this in mind, 9to5 Mac says that Apple will introduce new incentives to encourage customers to buy their iPhones at Apple Retail Stores, to be introduced at Apple’s quarterly retail store meeting on July 28. It is thought that the inclusion of an iPhone as part of Apple's annual "back to school" promotion is part of this new approach.
