iPhone 6s ad pops up in app store.JPG

According to 9to5 Mac Apple is using a clever marketing tool to try and nudge owners of older iPhones to take the plunge and buy the iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus when they visit the App Store.

The technique was first noticed by Twitter user @Dirk_Gently, who spotted that when someone is browsing around in the App Store with an iPhone 5s or older model, they might see a pop-up appearing on the screen where they are browsing, with the advert trumpeting the iPhone 6s’s “Ridiculously Powerful” appeal, as well as giving the user the option to “Learn More” or “Upgrade Now.” If you choose the latter option and click on that link you’ll arrive at the Apple Store app, from where you can choose to buy the new iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus. If you wish to ignore the advert and carry on regardless with your humble old phone, then you’ll have to press “Skip” in order to get back to your App Store browsing.

9to5 Mac notes that this seems to be something that was included in the recently released iOS 9.2, as it had not been seen previous to that. And while Apple has used banner ads and similar advertising in the App Store before, this is possible the most in-your-face method that it has used to date, and in particular a pop-up that actually requires you to take some action in order to resume your activities in the App Store.

I think people will find that really annoying.
