Slash Gear reports on new figures today from ABI Research that show that Apple and Samsung are continuing to carve up the global smartphone market between them, with the two companies combined accounting for 55% of shipments and 90% of profits worldwide in the first quarter of 2012. Although smartphone shipments have grown by 41% year-over-year, reaching 144.6 million in the first quarter of 2012, it seems like it’s just these two companies that are reaping the major rewards of the smartphone boom, with Apple shipping 35 million iPhones in the first quarter of the year, and Samsung shipping 43 million units. Nokia comes in third, with just 11.9 million units shipped, and RIM is fourth, with 11.1 million units, Sony is fifth with 7 million units, Huawei has 6.8 million units, and ZTE rounds out the bottom with 4.9 million units shipped. Slash Gear notes that only Samsung and Sony saw sequential growth in shipments, with Nokia faring particularly badly with a drop of 40%, and RIM suffering too, with a fall of 20%.
