9to5 Mac reports on a note from IHS-iSuppli senior analyst Wayne Lam regarding the possibility of the next iPhone, due for release in September, supporting 4G LTE. Lam says he doesn’t know for sure, of course, but appears to be hinting that it is unlikely as he says that in order for the iPhone 5 to support the first-generation LTE baseband processor and its supporting chipset, “the iPhone’s miniscule printed circuit board (PCB) will have to grow in size”.

The implication is that Apple will most likely not want to make an iPhone that big, especially when the next batch of LTE chips, which are due in 2012, will be much smaller and therefore able to fit within Apple’s usual preferred parameters for the iPhone. 9to5 Mac notes that Apple’s chief financial officer, Peter Oppenheimer stated in the April 2011 Apple earnings call that the first generation LTE chipsets “forced a lot of design compromises with the handset, and some of those we are just not willing to make.”
