Advice needed

Hi All, if anybody could shine some light on my issue that would be great.

My father in-law recently bought an 8gb iphone 3G that i'm guessing is jailbroken as it has the cydia app installed on it. What we wanted to do was restore the phone so it has legit unjailbroken software on. However, when we try doing it through itunes we then get stuck on registering the phone and itunes states that there is no sim card in the phone when there is.

Anyone have any ideas?

Go into Settings>General>About... what's next to "Version" & "Modem Firmware?"

The chances are the iPhone was software unlocked...by restoring to original settings you may have removed the unlock....a sim(working or not) from the original service provider is required to activate the iPhone...?
