The Apple Watch Edition is a beautiful piece of technology, however dishing out $10,000+ seems a bit ridiculous for a first-generation device. A month ago we saw our first glimpse of folks trying to "beat the system".

An Indiegogo campaign claimed that it would be able to make a a gold casing for any Apple Watch model for around $2,000. That Indiegogo campaign has now ended and never reached its goal. However there are alternatives out there that seem to drop the price even more.

WatchPlate
MacRumors forum member RianFlynn recently launched a website called WatchPlate, where he provides a service to add a thin coating of 24-karet gold to stainless steel Apple Watch models. The gold itself is said to cost around $6, but the forum member is taking orders for $399.

The Time Preserve
The Time Preserve has been restoring watches since 1995. The company recently launched a service where it would use custom-formulated gold electroplating to turn a stainless steel Apple Watch gold. The Time Preserve promises 5 to 6 microns of thick plating and ranges from $550 to $650 for the service.
Gold Spray Paint
This one is for the average do-it-yourself'er. YouTuber Casey Neistat recently posted a video showing how to spray paint an Apple Watch Sport gold. Of course we suggest that nobody should actually do this, but Casey's results looked pretty good after the job. Due note that the YouTuber's Watch won't look like that for long, spray paint easily scratches and chips.
