3gs restore

A 3gs on ios 4.3.4. What is the easiest way to restore it without updating the baseband?

Use redsn0w to create a custom IPSW to update to. It'll allow you to preserve your Baseband while still updating to the latest iOS version. Do you know what SHSHs you have available for your 3GS? If not, download Tiny Umbrella from ih8snow.com and see if you have SHSHs for 5.0.1. That'll help since there's an Untethered JB for 5.0.1.

So then I download 5.0.1,make a custom ipsw and then restore through itunes using tht custom ipsw?

Correct... if you have SHSHs for 5.0.1 after running Tiny Umbrella.

No, the OP did not state they wanted to Jailbreak. However, it's always a good rule of thumb to mention to individuals who are upgrading from any previous iOS version that 5.1 is a Tethered Only JB at this time... and that 5.0.1 is the latest version that's Untethered.
