iphone stuck on recovery screen

Hi folks i wondered if anyone can help me ?

I have just been given an iphone 3gs and the person said it is 5.1 firmware but they tried to jailbreak it and now its stuck on a screen that shows a charging cable and wont do anything

Is there a way to get it working again

Put it into DFU mode. Download the latest iOS for the 3GS (which is 6.0.1) and restore it using iTunes or RedSn0w.

I would always recommend putting a device into DFU mode before any upgrades. It eliminates some of the preliminary errors and such that you might get
