MacRumors reports today on an amazing app called Word Lens that provides real -time translation of text. The augmented-reality app for iPhone and iPod touch (with video camera) enables you to simply point your device at something you want translated, then watch open-mouthed as the program translates the writing and displays it over the top of the word or phrase you just translated. Words don’t really do it justice, you really have to watch the video and see it in action to be truly amazed!

Even more amazingly, the app, which comes from a developer called Quest Visual, is free to download. Language packs for Spanish to English and English to Spanish are available for $4.99 each, with more language packs planned. Translations are done word for word, so context is not relevant, and because the translation is done solely on-app, you don’t even need to have a network connection for it to work. Impressive stuff indeed!
