upgrading 3g iphone to 4.2 need some help

hi,new to the forum and have a couple questions.When i upgrade i know will lose my apps i downloaded,but thats ok they are all free and i can get them back.will i lose my phone contacts and e-mail information?

Hi pumpy1... welcome!! Create a backup via iTunes before updating to 4.2.1. Then, during the update process it'll ask if you'd like to update from a backup or as a new device. Choose to update from that backup. That way, all you're apps, contacts, texts, info, ect. will be returned to your iPhone when the update is complete.

plug your iPhone into itunes. transfer purchases and back it up. put it into DFU mode. then, hit restore. it will update ur iPhone. then during setup, restore from the backup
