update SW to IOS 3GS

Probably been asked before but here goes I have a 3GS with version 4.2.1 can I update to version 5 direct or do I have to go through the various versions to get there.

Does the 3GS work well with version 5 if not what is the optimum SW version for the 3 GS

When you update an iDevice via iTunes it can only be updated to the most recent iOS release... which currently is 5.0.1. From what I've seen from users here on the Forum the 3GS doesn't have any issues running on 5.0.1. Of course, though, it's not going to process some things as fast as the 4 or 4S.
