Here is a setting on the iPhone that can remind you about a SMS you haven't read yet.
The setting is "repeat the alert" "never" Til 1, 2 - eh. Lots....

I just need one beep when I get an SMS. So my setting is on "never" repeat the alert.

The same setting is on my wife's iPhone 4s. But she gets 2 alerts. First the original one. And if she doesn't read the SMS at ones. The alert repeats after some minutes.
The setting is sett to "never".
