Do you have a tethering plan?
If you don't have tethering as a service from your provider (something like $20 a month with AT&T I believe), then you need to jailbreak your phone and download one of the many free tethering apps that only work with jailbroken iPhones.
If you HAVE tethering with your provider, call them. If you don't, and you haven't or don't want to jailbreak it, you're out of luck like the rest of us
