Simslot not reading card

I am new to this used iOS 6.1.3, guess its iphone 3gs or something. i am not able to use it because At&t said it might be a problem with the sim reader. I've noticed a few YouTube videos of people displaying how to fix this problem. At&t Said this phone may or may not read simcards for the at&t gophone account. With out the sim, its pretty much useless right??

Without a SIM, you can only use the device as an iPod-like state.
