I tried custom widgets for phone, iMessage, WhatsApp but of course they didn't show badges. They looked good but I was put of the loop too much.

Same here and that's why I put some icons in folders so I can see notifications. I just use a mixture of custom and stock, this method works for me.

I'm not clear on the wasting money part, however I'm hoping that Apple allows for notification badges on Widgets and custom icons in the near future.
