9to5 Mac reports that according to Israeli blog The Verifier, the forthcoming iPhone 8 will have a Smart Connector to support inductive wireless charging and VR/AR accessories. Currently the iPad Pro is the only Apple device to use the Smart Connector. Inductive wireless charging is also possible via the iPad Pro Smart Connector using Logitech Base.
Last year it was rumoured that the iPhone 7 Plus would have a Smart Connector on the back prior to that phone’s launch, but that did not end up happening.
As far as the accuracy of this report is concerned, The Verifier has not yet had any of its Apple device stories verified as the products they have reported on have not yet been released, including forthcoming iOS 11 features such as group FaceTime and Siri integration with iMessage. Apple does have development labs in Israel, so it’s possible that the source has heard something from there.
This is the first time that the iPhone 8 is rumoured to have a Smart Connector.
