Question about text message

Got a friend and he is in my contacts on my phone.
Got text message yesterday saying this is my new number.
The text did not include number.
Not knowing is old number by memory will his new number enter automatically into contacts so in case I delete text I recieved yesterday when I text him will I be able to reach him or should I get a hold of him and have him just send his number?

No, you will have to re enter the correct number into your contacts as far as I know. Haven't seen anything like this before and I have owned a few iPhones.

You can add the number to an existing contact.
To do so, open the message. The telephone number should be visible at the top. Tap the i icon next to it to get to the next screen:

There, tap the arrow:

Now select "Add to existing contact:

You get to your contact list. Choose your friend's name to add the number.

After saving the updated contact you can open it up from contacts, select edit and delete the old number if it isn't valid anymore.
