Purchasing free apps

Is interesting to note that I am unable to purchase FREE apps due to my credit card having insufficient funds. Oh well that should teach me to not. overspend. But I don't really understand why I need to give card details for a free app

iTunes asks me payment questions when I download a free up-date to an App I already have. I don't understand that one either.

Maybe it's just to verify if you really are the owner of your iTunes account?

I've never had anything like that, mine only charges if it cost, and it takes several days to a week before the charges show up on my account, so in your instance it's unusual to me.

Yep mine does that also but if I am downloading say three apps it only asks on the first one also same thiing it won't allow me to download a free app update with the card with no $ in it. I deliberately use that card for security
