Please help, upgrading fw4.0 to 6 for iphone 3gs

Hi guys, i have a iphone 3gs with fw4.0 old bootrom that has never been updated. Iam trying to upgrade with the recent itunes to the last fw6 for this model. However ofcourse i am unable to. I get an 31.. Somethin error to check connection etc etc. i have tried upgrading on diverent machines without succes. Please advice.
