Went up to Hawaii Volcanoes
Finally got to see “our” volcano fountain! The current series of eruptions began nearly a year ago last December. Episode 38 began this morning (Saturday) at 8:45 a.m., HST, with low fountains. Pictured is the South vent, which became dominant (max height 1200’/370m). Prior to this, there were 3 fountains about 500’ (150m) each, which is a first for this ongoing series. The most recent episodes had 2 fountains.
A visitor asked me about the lava temperature and pressure. I didn’t know, so I looked it up. The lava temperature is about 2,120°F (1,150°C). As far as the pressure goes, I can only state what volcanologists use for a magma chamber model - 55 MPa (mega pascal). My calculations work out to 7,975 psi. Wrong or right, plenty! This does not equate to “real time” numbers. That requires further calculations beyond my pay grade.
The pics are from Volcano House which sits on the rim of Kīlauea Crater. It includes a hotel, restaurant, bar, and gift shops. (The eruption is in Halemaumau Crater inside Kīlauea Crater.) …
