Primarily because you can do full 360 shots if the lighting is good. But the built in one is fantastic for quickies or if you need something for printing.

It works best in bright evenly lit scenes. I've also discovered that you don't have to make a full panorama, you can stop whenever you've covered the scene you're shooting.
