French publisher DotEmu specialises in bringing old retro games back to life, which is exactly what it’s done with this new iPhone/iPod touch/iPad version of P–47: The Phantom Fighter, which was originally released by Jaleco back in 1988 on arcade cabinet, before eventually coming out on Amiga, Atari, Amstrad, Commodore 64 and PC. In the side-scrolling game, you get to pilot one of the most powerful planes during World War II and fight on all fronts to rule the sky.

The game features two modes: Survival and History. In Survival Mode, you must get as far as you can with just nine lives, and in History mode you have five lives with which to unlock each level one by one and try to progress in the game.

If you love your retro old-school side-scrolling shooters then you’re really going to love P–47: The Phantom Fighter, with its intuitive touch-screen controls, gorgeous scenery and variety of enemies. You can also share your scores on Game Center or on Facebook without having to leave the game.

Click here to download the game for $1.99/€1.59: P-47 - The Phantom Fighter for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), and iPad on the iTunes App Store
