Check your email account online and see if there is a notes folder. See if they ended up there.

Check Settings >Mail, contacts, calendar and sync it over if you know which account it's linked to

Personally, I turned sync off, simply because I can send it to myself if need be. I'd rather just keep notes on my phone.

You should be able to turn it off in settings. In many cases, you'd have situations like this where your notes are synced and suddenly erased from your device, so turning sync off rids of that, and as Xray said, you'd rather that you transfer or sync your notes on your own terms to ensure security if they're personal information
