A while ago it was reported that the Apple iPhone has become one of the most popular cameras for the average folk, surpassing higher-end choices like Canon or Nikon. This aspect hasn’t escaped the watchful eye of the app developers, and from now on, Apple customers into photography can enjoy the benefits of a brand new app that turn their device into a fancy configurable remote release for the camera. Meet the Triggertrap app.

The technology works thanks to another two hardware components: a Mobile Dongle and a camera cable. The two thus provide a different spectrum of methods of shutter releases like distance lapse, face recognition or sound and motion detectors.

Distance lapse is the feature that allows the camera to take a photo at a set distance intervals (like 10 meters for example). The images could then be glued together to create a stop motion movie.

The product was assembled by combining two previously popular ideas – the Kickstarter Triggertrap v.1 and Triggertrap Shield for Arduino . If used on its own the Tricggertrap app will end up triggering the iPhone’s internal camera but the real advantage of using the application is that you can connect the phone to your SLR or other professional camera you might have.

For those interested in trying out this application, Triggertrap has released a free trial version, so users can get the hang of things and decide if they like the concept. If they do, they can update their version to the premium one which overall comes at the price of $9.99. The free version incorporates just three modes: Cable Release mode, Timelapse and Seismic mode.
