Jony Ive talks to TechFest in New York.JPG

MacRumors reports that Apple design chief Jony Ive gave a big interview to The New Yorker editor David Remnick onstage at TechFest 2017 in New York. In a wide-ranging discussion, Ive touched on many subjects, including his philosophy of design, what it was like working with Steve Jobs, the iPhone X, and what sort of future tech Apple is currently working on. As far as the latter is concerned, Ive said that Apple has “certain ideas” in mind, but that it is “waiting for the technology to catch up with the idea.”

When asked if he was still hungry for new designs and products, Ive said, “Absolutely.” He went on to say that the opportunities for displays are “extraordinary.”

Talking about the iPhone X, Ive said,

“The phone we just announced a few weeks ago. That technology is something we’d been working on for five years. We had prototypes. This is an interesting one, there’s a tendency, and I understand it, with the benefit of hindsight, it all seems inevitable.

“For 99 percent of the time, it didn’t work for us. For 99% of the development cycle all we had were things that failed.”

Speaking about his years spent working with Steve Jobs, Ive said that money was never the driving factor for the late, great Apple co-founder and CEO, “Let’s focus on making some good products” was Jobs’ approach, pure and simple.
