ipod touch jailbreak help

i know this is an iphone forum but i cant find a better/helpful place then this place. I got an ipod touch, i dont know if it's a 2g or a 3g. The version is 3.1.3. It's an 8gb with a silver back. I would like to jailbreak it the untethered way. Any advice before I starting jailbreaking? What application is good for jailbreaking? Thanks
