Nielsen reports today via its blog on the continuing popularity of smartphones in the U.S., based on its latest survey. Judging by the survey findings, Apple has much to be pleased about, whereas Google (Android) and RIM (BlackBerry) might be smiling a little less than their Cupertino counterparts. According to Nielsen’s May survey of mobile phone customers in the U.S., 38 % of mobile phone customers now own smartphones, and 55 %of those who brought a phone in the last three months chose to buy a smartphone instead of a feature phone, which marks an increase of 21 % from just over a year ago. The good news for Apple specifically comes into play with the breakdown of the May figures in terms of device OS share, as although Android is still the most popular smartphone operating system according to Nielsen’s figures, with 38 % of the smartphone market, it’s Apple who has shown the most growth over the past few months, with 27 %, and RIM’s BlackBerry bringing up the rear in third place with 21 %. In fact, Nielsen says, Apple is “now driving smartphone growth.”

As Cult of Mac points out, much of this ever increasing success for the iPhone could well be due to the arrival of the Verizion iPhone 4, which coincided with the May figures, of course.

Thats funny, especially when you consider Apple is one company versus the dozens of companies making Android phones.
