Is there any reason an iphone woukd have a black screen besides it needing a new lcd? Itunes recognizes it and it makes a sound when connected to a charger but nothing appears on the screen

When you hook up to iTunes you are being powered via computer. So it can't be the battery. Doesn't sound good.

Lol yea sorry , but you tube it , it happend to mine before ribbon came on hooked

The only two reasons that it would have a "black screen" would be a loose and/or disconnected ribbon or, as you mentioned, it needs a new display panel.

Aside from YouTube... here's an in depth, step by step, how-to showing each connection & screw location when it comes to the disassembly of your iPhone 4. Mind you, it's a tedious process but can be done by anyone w/ the proper tools and a little patience. Installing iPhone 4 Display Assembly Replacement - iFixit

IIRC it should be on the top right of the iPhone assuming you're resting the back side of the iPhone and "peeling up" the screen side. Or that might be for the 3GS....

If the LCD was damaged, you can always buy a replacement screen and DIY. A very good website for a step-by-step guide is ifixit.com

The screen replacements can be bought on ebay for 25 USD. They have "OEM" LCD's and I generally have had a lot of success with them. People have said it looks like original after I replaced screens. Again check out the guides on ifixit.com for help on repairing your iPhone is the LCD part is broken.
