IPhone best choice for off-carrier access to Wifi and Skype and Google Talk?

If I would just like to use a phone that is independent of any carrier just for access to Wifi and Skype and Google Talk would an IPhone be my best choice? Thanks...

Yes it would be. The integrity of the phone can handle the data rate between both mentioned apps. Wifi and 3G (possibly 2G/EDGE) can be used to access Skype/GTalk.
My girlfriend lives in Cali and on my break at work, I access Whatsapp, HeyTell, Skype etc through a coffee shop nearby or I access my 3G data.
