I work in a hospital, and recently we had a patient that was really sick and having terrible muscle contraction in her abdomen, and one of the doctors wanted to send a video she made with her phone to a specialist she knew. The problem was, we didn’t know of a way to do this without violating HIPAA patient confidentiality laws, since we know that sending anything by SMS text is a violation.

My question is, does anyone know of a way to send a video text message that is HIPAA compliant?

Is there an app we can use?

Yes, you can use Tigertext. This is a HIPAA compliant text messaging app that we use in our hospital. They have a free version, but we were given the Pro version by IT. It can send HIPAA compliant Video and works with Dropbox also.

Great app, easy to use, very secure and HIPAA compliant.

www.tigertext.com

Hope this helps.

You really need to speak to your Corporate Compliance and IT/security department about this. Utilizing apps that are not approved by your health system may be at risk for breaching PHI. They will know best which apps will work in maintaining PHI of a patient. Your hospital may in fact already have these tools in place for the physicians to use.
