iPhone 5s Secure Enclave Decryption Key Cracked

BGR writes that according to the original report in Redmond Pie, security researcher @xerub tweeted confirmation that the “fully grown” decryption key of the iPhone 5s Secure Enclave has been cracked.

Another security researcher, Will Strafach, clarified and added some more information, stating “very important: secure enclave has not been hacked. decryption key in this case is for the firmware, allowing more researchers to look at it.”

So basically, this does not make your iPhone 5s less secure at the moment, but it does mean that researchers and hackers will be able to study the firmware involved. But even then, there’s no cause for iPhone 5s owners to worry, as even if hackers do find exploits in the software as a result of this crack, they will still need physical access to your phone in order to update the Secure Enclave software and then use it for nefarious purposes.

I think it’s the height of irresponsibility for these so-called security researchers to do this and then publicize it. Their so-called research has nothing to do with making security any better.
