Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports today on Nielsen’s December survey of the US mobile phone market, the results of which have been released today. The results show that the release of the iPhone 4S has made a significant impact on the market, with 44% of recent smartphone buyers surveyed in December saying that they bought an iPhone, up from 25.1% in October. The survey also revealed that 57% of new iPhone buyers said they picked the iPhone 4S over the cheaper iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS. Perhaps most interestingly of all, the Nielsen survey found that Android’s lead with new customers has markedly fallen off in the past two months. In December, 46.9% of respondents said that they had bought an Android-powered phone, a big drop from the 61.6% who said the same prior to the release of the iPhone 4S on October 14. You can see even more clearly on Nielsen’s graph just how much iOS has caught up with Android. This makes the next set of figures even more crucial. Will iOS finally take over from Android?
