Is it necessary to upgrade to IOS 5.0.1 from 5.0 for IPhone 4.

No.. but Apple says it makes a few fixes to help the battery issue.

Updated to 5.01 today for my iPhone4 but suppose will have to wait till I can notice the effects of the improvements.
