We are new to smart phones. We don't intend to stream movies, play games. etc.

Our main uses are for voice, texting, the odd internet search and maybe check email once or twice a day.

After a day I'm getting a few uncomfortable feelings. Like data is being used whether I'm using the phone or not.
I set up WiFi for when I'm at home.

How do I know if my WiFi connection is carrying the data?

That's what I hoped. When I turn WiFi off that little symbol is replaced by LTE.
Thanks.

Go to settings.
Choose Mobile Data and scroll to the bottom of that page.
There turn off Wifi assist.
That way it will not use any cellular data while connected to wifi.
This has been advised earlier and it helped on phones in my family.

Thanks.
I wish I had written all the changes in case I have a problem and have to turn something on.
Also, I have to make some of the changes on my wife's iphone now.
