Hello from Arizona. I will be shopping for a smart phone for my wife and for myself. We have always used the cell phone as just a phone, but are now thinking of joining the rest of humanity, even tho we are well past 60. Our current phones are run of the mill flip phones. And the move to a smart phone will be our first.

The phones have been narrowed down to the iPhone and the offerings from Black Berry, the Z10 and possibly the Q10. We would like to be able to read our email, read news papers, listen to NPR, and maybe do a little on line shopping. We will be staying with t-mobile. I am leaning toward the BB, for no particular reason and my wife is looking at the iPhone, because it is Apple.

And advice that we can get regarding strengths and weaknesses of these phones will be welcome. Also, how much data should we get in the plan? I have no idea how much would be needed.

Thanks in advance.

The iPhone is your best bet. Maybe event the 4s model. It's the easiest transition into the smart phone world :). You will be thrown off at first but it won't take long to get the hang of it :)

Hi Old Sarge--

I'd say go with iPhones as well! The operations of the iPhone is very clear and easy. It didn't take long for my 76-year old mother to figure out how to use her new iPad! My mom does not have an iphone, but the operating system runs on the same Version as the iphone. She uses it to read her Kindle Books, watch Netflix, listen to music, play her casino games and/or do the occasional gmail.

The instructions are fairly easy to set up and it only takes you minutes to do. One thing though, you will need to set up an Apple ID and password through registration process. That way, you can reap the benefits of buying paid and free apps!! You will love it and so will your wife!!

And by the way...

Thanks folks. Regarding the Apple ID, will what we have for the iMac and iPad be good or do we need to have another? I think one of the problems I have, or misunderstanding is the data requirements. I am under the impression that the iPhone and other smart phone are like little hand held computers but to use it you need a data plan. How much data would be needed for what we would be doing? I don't want to be sold more than is necessary.

If I am making a mountain out of a mole hill, please, someone let me know.

Thanks.

You would need a data plan. Your data will run high the first month bc that is when your downloading all your apps. But if you have wifi you can turn that on and don't have to have such a high data plan. I have 5g data plan but dropped it to 3G cause I was barely using 2g. Hope this helped. And if you have an apple or iTunes I'd you shouldn't need a new one.

Ok, than it sounds like you are all set with having an Apple ID already since you have an IMac and an iPad. Didn't know you had those two already!

I am on the 2 gb Data plan for myself. I check my FB, Twitter, and emails regularly. I also utilize my iphone to access this forum and several others I am on daily. I also have a game that requires wifi connection along with accessing my weather apps. Each month I meet about I use about 1 gb or less out of my 2gb that I am allowed. When I am home, my phone is set to pick up my home network and so no cell data is being used than. Hope that helps.

Skimonkey - The iPad I got for my wife a few years back. It is their first model and I got it cheap when the new model came out. I've used it a couple of times but don't much care for it. But she likes the technology. We have an Apple router in the house and it works well and connects the iPad as well as the MacBooks when we use those.

So, if wi fi is available, does it get used automatically by the phone or do you have to set it special?

I am going to access the links you provided to see what I can learn on my own.

Many thanks.

Hi Old Sarge--I see what you are saying--I have the ipad 2 and also bought one for my mom as well.

Regarding the iphone and your home network...nothing special needs to be done. As long as you have your home network password available, all you have to do is just add that when your phone picks up the connection. Let me add some pics for better understanding....give me a few seconds....

On you iPhone, you must go to Settings/wifi/choose network.

You phone should pick up your home network wifi. Once it does, it will ask for you to enter your security network code.

Welcome aboard and it looks like you have alot of good info in this thread to get ya started...

hey there, my parents just went through a similar ordeal of doing flip -> smart phone. my mom opted to get an android because she was worried about not having a physical keyboard and having to rely solely on touch. she got some entry level phone that has a pull out QWERTY board and a touch screen as well. long story short, she wishes she got an iphone. the touch screen on the iphone is super responsive and easy to use. she finds it super annoying dealing with a bad touch screen, and the QWERTY is pretty much useless.

I'd probably stay away from a QWERTY phone since it makes it pretty bulky. go for an iphone or another quality phone that has a nice touch screen.

Thanks. I am still doing homework on this. Maybe if an administer gets this he/she can kick it over to the iPhone5 area so I don't tie up the welcome mat. Thanks.
