Is it true that if you don't use apple headphones that you can mess up your iPhone? Lastnight I had this problem had to wipe out everything.. There was no sound on the phone afterwards

Well, I've been using my SkullCandy's now for about a week with no problems. What kind where you using?

I've never heard that, unless they're powered headphones and in some way sent a surge to the iPhone

No way for a 3rd patry earphone damage the iPhone, either the 3rd party earphone works either it doesn't. iOS doesn't allow 3rd party hardware communicate with it in a way that it can mess it up. I've used 2 differents earphones and a headphone on my iDevice and without messing iOS issue. But i should say that i've experience this only with iPhone 4 and maybe earlier version of iPhone are have weak iOS.

I use Diddy Beats with mine and i havent had any problems so far....knock on wood.....lol
