9to5 Mac reports today on what it calls a “poorly translated” news story on Macotakara, which says that Huan Wenliang, China Unicom’s Deputy Director of Research, appears to have confirmed the existence of an iPhone 5 with 21 Mbps HSPA+ capabilities when he was making a keynote speech at Macworld Asia 2011 this week. And it wasn’t just a slip of the tongue either, as he even had a slide with the words “iPhone 5” and “HSPA+”, although with no picture of course. Japanese IT news site, PC Watch, which also supplied the picture of the slide, confirmed that the Deputy Director of Research did indeed say that the iPhone 5 will have support for W-CDMA-based HSPA+ at his keynote speech. Although this isn't entirely a bolt from the blue, as 9to5 Mac notes, rumors have been swirling around for some time that Apple has been sending out LTE-capable iPhones and iPads to its carrier partners for in-the-field testing, and AT&T has already started installing HSPA+ equipment, but this would seem to be the first time that it has been stated so emphatically by someone clearly in the know. Not long to wait now to find out!

Thanks for the info Maura. This make me more and more excited about the release of the new I device........

Something just doesn't jive. A GSM/CDMA world iPhone that supports HSPA+? That sounds good in theory but who the heck made the radio chip for that and why hasn't it shown up in someones production analyst or SEC filing?
