While in the car following Google Maps directions, I didn't like that my location on my phone was not showing the direction I was going in...south on a freeway. So I used compass mode, and it was off by about 45 degrees; is there a way to align my GPS to get the compass working right?

check to see if you are in Magnetic North or True North mode. I know when I changed mine it shifted quite a bit (depends on where you live to how much it will change)
I've done a few field tests with the "compass" and found it extremely unreliable. The alignment tool (waving it in a figure of eight) doesn't work, and I've found it to be way off the mark. Wouldn't trust it at all.
Wave the phone in a figure of eight pattern. That is supposed to calibrate it, but I've never had much success with it.
